We all know that craft beer scene is what is happening right now, but watch out, there is a new/old player coming to the table.  That’s right, hard cider is making a return and is kicking ass and taking names.  According to NPR, “Hard cider was a popular drink in America before Prohibition. These days, sales are tiny compared to beer and wine, but they’re growing fast, more or less doubling every year. There are at least three cider bars on the West Coast and two are planned for Chicago.Cider drinkers have much in common with craft beer consumers, says Danelle Kosmal, vice president of the Beverage Alcohol Practice at Nielsen. “They tend to be millennials, they tend to have higher income,” she says. “But one difference with cider … is it’s attracting more females compared to beer.”

I, personally, love cider…pear in particular.  The crisp flavor offers something new and light when the stout seems a bit heavy.  Nightclub.com said this about this rapidly growing trend, “Hard cider continues to trend up, rising significantly in volume and sales, while also garnering more menu placements and tap handles. In fact, cider is the fastest-growing adult beverage category in restaurants and bars, and three of the top five fastest-growing on-premise brands are ciders, according to Technomic’s recent BarTAB Report. Even with that momentum, cider remains a small category. However, its position as a unique alternative to beer, wine or spirits that is food-friendly and relevant for men and women, not to mention enjoying a ‘craft’ halo, prompts one-third of consumers to order cider at least once a month, according to BarTAB.”
