Running on fumes is not an option at Edgyplate.com – so we’re always on the look-out for good-tasting, natural and non-jittery means of revving up. And, snobs that we cheerfully admit to being, we keep our french press, hand-thrown tea pot and mini fridge all within arm’s length.
One very, very wonderful product we love – and we had the pleasure of meeting its reps recently at the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco – is GURU energy drink. This organic, totally delish and, yes, energy-imbuing beverage is available at major chains like Whole Foods and Kroger and Vitamin Shoppe. You can also find it at 24h Fitness, LA Fitness and order it from Amazon.com. The company’s web site, Guruenergy.com, provides more outlets, and the blog (Guruenergy.com/blog, of course) is really fun.
A little background: GURU took wings (we had to…) back in the late 1990s when four Montreal college boys hit on an idea for something the world had never experienced – an all-natural energy drink. Oh, sure, there were liquid stimulants on the market, but these were high-octane mixtures that shot the imbiber into the stratosphere and then let that person drop like a rock without a parachute. Perhaps you’ve been on that ride. Lord knows we have.
Anyway, our four Canadian dudes agreed that their drink had to taste good, and it couldn’t be bad for you.
The blog says, “These we’re pretty exciting times. At the end of the summer of ’99, we all flew to California to prepare the first batch. This factory we chose was one of the few that could handle our brewing and preservation processes. The small aluminum cans had to be shipped from New York to be filled in this factory in the middle of the Californian desert. It was a logistical nightmare, but for the naive entrepreneurs we were, the dream was getting real. Back to Montreal, we launched our product at a downtown street fair and it was an instant success.”
“While many beverages deliver energy through synthetic derivatives, we focus on crafting good energy with quality organic ingredients. Each 8.4oz can of GURU Energy Drink contains 100 mg of naturally occurring caffeine through powerful ingredients such as organic guarana seed extract and organic green tea.”
Did we tell you we love this stuff? We do! And, it’s organic! Woo hoo!
GURU comes in two formulas, Lite and original. GURU Lite contains organic cane syrup, citric acid, natural flavors, guarana seed extract, salt, stevia leaf extract, echinacea flower extract, green tea leaf extract, luo han guo fruit extract, panax ginseng root extract, and it has but five (5!) calories.
The original formula, which has only 140 calories per 8-oz can, contains sparkling water, organic cane syrup, organic white grape juice concentrate, natural flavors, apple acid, citric acid, organic green tea leaf extract, organic guarana seed extract, organic echinacea flower extract, organic panax ginseng root extract.
And, “GURU’s recent USDA certification reiterates our commitment to delivering good energy and adhering to a high standard of quality. The certification ensures that our beverages are produced without antibiotics, pesticides, irradiation or bioengineering. GURU Energy Drinks are also certified Vegan and do not contain gluten or GMOs.”
There’s room on the blog for entrepreneurs of all sorts to post their stories, and the good folks at GURU say, “At GURU our good energy comes from people first. If you have enthusiasm, positive energy and are really good at what you do, then you probably will feel right at home here.”
We do, and we do! Thanks, GURU!
And the blog says, “In recent years, we expanded our market to the US with partners like Whole Foods and Lifetime Fitness Gyms. We built a good reputation among the health and active lifestyle crowd. We think our next challenge is to put our good energy in the hands of more people with the help of distribution and partnerships. We need to make GURU available to anybody who wants good energy to do greater things. We believe that the world has enough problems to solve and we want to help you be part of the solution.
Our new friend Matt Ruyssers, sales manager, fielded some questions about GURU to provide us with personalized info. Talk about fitting right in – Matt is the poster boy for what makes this company so special.
“At GURU, it is our passion to outdo ourselves in everything we do as a brand, as team, as people, to give our customers the very best products,” he says. “Our drinks are crafted, not manufactured. GURU Energy Drinks are all-natural and crafted with simple botanicals. We provide Good Energy that is certified organic, gluten-free, vegan, GMO Project verified and free of preservatives. Our drinks are “clean” and effective.
What’s more, GURU is full tuned in to the Millennial wavelength.
Matt says, “Millennials are better educated than previous generations and therefore are more health conscious. They are aligned with ‘food movements’ and love organic, local, handmade products. They are slowly changing the face of food markets. We also know that tiredness and lack of energy is one of their top health concerns, and with reason: Millennials are always on the go and have very busy schedules.”
He’s been reading our mail!
“GURU is perfect for millennials because our product is aligned with their needs; we are the healthy alternative to conventional energy drinks,” he adds
It’s interesting that an energy drink company is so laid back, but that’s how GURU rolls. Matt says, “At GURU we have a less aggressive marketing approach. We rely on word-to-mouth, community involvement and relationships to grow. When we communicate, we try to be inspirational in tone and content, well-articulated, and deliver a clear and positive message. It all starts with Good Energy!
Unlike ‘conventional’ energy drink brands, we fuel innovation, share Good Energy and give people that extra push so they can realize their dreams and aspirations.”
Thoughtful and thought-provoking, we say. Matt adds, “We support inventors, creators, innovators, optimists and artists because we believe they are the root to every positive change. Our customers have a passion for accomplishments, they have energy and are self-motivated. That’s why we call our customers Makers.”
